Local Utility Makes $10,000 Gift to Establish the Washington Gas COVID-19 Emergency Education Fund for Montgomery College Students
Washington Gas has made a $10,000 gift to establish the Washington Gas COVID-19 Emergency Education Fund for Montgomery College students.
The Washington Gas COVID-19 Emergency Education Fund will provide emergency assistance to students for urgent needs that are not covered by the federal CARES Act emergency grant to Montgomery College.
Any student may receive this assistance, including DREAMers, DACA and international students; high school students dually enrolled at Montgomery College; and distance learning students.
“The support of Washington Gas will make an immediate impact this fall and we are very grateful. We have students who are struggling to access basic resources while balancing multiple commitments to family and often jobs,” said Joyce Matthews, vice president of development and alumni relations and executive director of the Montgomery College Foundation. “This donation is a powerful reminder that Washington Gas is led by people who care and want to lift up our students as they work to improve their lives and their community.”
“This pandemic has disrupted so many lives across our community. We are pleased to be able to play a part in helping students keep their education on track during these difficult times,” said Blue Jenkins, President of Washington Gas. “We hope these scholarship funds will ease the stress some of the students are feeling as they work so hard to make a better life for themselves and their families.”
Funds may be utilized to pay for tuition assistance, food, technology or other student needs, related either to the Covid-19 crisis or an unforeseen situation that may prevent a student from staying enrolled and completing his or her degree.
In 1994, the company established the Washington Gas Light Company – Maryland Division Endowment, for students majoring in Engineering, Information Systems, or Communications.
Since 2011, employees from Washington Gas’ Winter Team have provided the largest group of volunteers for the annual Maryland Science Bowl competition for high school students, an event hosted by Montgomery College.
Washington Gas also has been the lead sponsor for the Maryland Science Bowl since the 2012 event.
