Adoption of FY17 Capital Budget Highlights Montgomery College Board of Trustees Open Meeting
The Montgomery College Board of Trustees held its third meeting of the academic year Monday evening, November 16, and voted to adopt the FY17 Capital Budget. The FY17 budget, the first year of the biennial capital budget, is made up of 26 projects and totals $67,511,000. The Rockville Student Services Center construction project comprises $53,172,000 of the total, equally funded by Montgomery County and the State of Maryland.
In the second of five constituent conversations with governance groups, the board met with student leaders from all three campuses who shared their thoughts about the College’s work in achieving the promise and closing gaps in achievement. Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard, president of Montgomery College, said the opportunity to meet with the board makes “governance real for the students” and she was impressed by the student leaders’ confidence and clarity in addressing the meeting.
The board also heard a detailed report on the general education program at the College, including a new initiative to provide students structure in their studies even if they have not yet decided on a major.
Two employees and one faculty member were recognized for professional achievement. Carl Whitman, vice president of instructional and information technology, was recently appointed to the new Maryland Cybersecurity Council chaired by Maryland’s Attorney General. Sarah Miller Espinosa, the College ombuds, was appointed to the board of directors of the Association for Conflict Resolution, an international association. Reginald Cyntje, professor of music, was named by On Tap magazine as a one of ten “hot” musicians to watch.
The board of trustees is the 10-member governing body of Montgomery College. Members are appointed by the governor for a six-year term and include a student member who serves a one-year term. The board meets once a month.
