Montgomery College to the 2015 Technovation Maryland Regional Pitch Event Saturday at the Germantown Campus
The Maryland Out of School Time (MOST) Network, in partnership with Montgomery College, will be hosting the 2015 Technovation Maryland Regional Pitch Event Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Bioscience Education Center on Montgomery College’ Germantown Campus.
Technovation is a global mobile application development competition for middle and high school-aged girls. Technovation’s mission is to inspire and educate girls and women to solve real world problems through technology innovation and ultimately aims to close the great underrepresentation of women in today’s STEM fields. Teams of five girls work with a coach and a female mentor from a STEM profession over a 12-week curriculum to develop a mobile application that solves a problem in their community. Teams also develop a business plan to potentially market their app.
Technovation Maryland is one of 11 regions around the world chosen to host an official Regional Pitch Event. The first place middle school and high school teams from this event will move forward as quarterfinalists to compete in the World Pitch Event in San Francisco for a grand prize of $10,000 to market their app.
At Saturday’s event, 13 Technovation teams of middle and high school girls from across the state of Maryland will be pitching their app demonstrations and marketing plans to a panel of judges. The judges attending are: Laura Bush – Principle Engineer of Cosmetics Products for Cover Girl, Kate McGuire – the Maryland Science Olympiad Baltimore Regional Coordinator, Brittany Young – UMBC Chemical Engineering & Physics Major, and Angelique Weger – Co-Organizer of Girl Develop It Baltimore.
Sponsorship for Technovation Maryland and the Regional Pitch Event is provided by Northrop Grumman. Invited dignitaries for the Regional Pitch Event from Northrop Grumman are Jeanne McGuirk – Corporate Citizenship Specialist of the Eastern Region and Melissa Sandlin – Corporate Citizenship Manager of the Eastern Region.
