Summer Program at Montgomery College Helps Aspiring Artists Prepare College Admissions Portfolios
The School of Art + Design in The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center will once again offer its highly successful Pre-College Portfolio Institute for rising high school juniors and seniors. The innovative program helps aspiring high school artists as they aspire to apply to the nation’s premiere art schools, equipping them with a solid understanding of the elements and principles of two-dimensional art forms which are critical skills to success in a college-level art program. Throughout the institute, students will have the opportunity to craft portfolios that illustrate technical skill, variety, originality, and visual organization. The program is especially helpful for motivated students who plan to major in fine art, graphic design, or multimedia design.
College-level instructors will mentor students throughout the three or six-week courses and will provide a rigorous and focused study of foundation skills that include an emphasis on drawing from observation. Students will exhibit their work at the end of each institute session.
In addition, the institute, with the assistance of the Montgomery College Foundation and the College’s Workforce Development & Continuing Education can award scholarships to Montgomery County and District of Columbia high school students who participated in a free and reduced meal program for the school year 2012-2013. Those scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who would like to apply must have proper documentation. Students have to pay the class fee depending on the session chosen, and either purchase or bring their own supplies.
