A Shared Commitment to Inclusion Leads to $1 Million Gift to Montgomery College from Virginia…
Statement by Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard, Montgomery College President, on the Passage of the Maryland Dream Act
“With voters choosing to say ‘yes’ to the Maryland Dream Act—Question 4—we will ensure that all of our young people have the opportunity to pursue affordable higher education. Our state’s very future depends on every high school graduate earning a college degree.
The passage of the Maryland Dream Act is a victory for students across the state of Maryland. Montgomery College will no longer stand alone; all community colleges will assess the lowest tuition rate for undocumented students, who meet the requirements set forth in the legislation. Most importantly, when these students graduate from community colleges, they will no longer have to pay expensive, out-of-state tuition rates as they work toward a baccalaureate degree.
Montgomery College will move swiftly and methodically to implement the new law, building upon the work completed last year when the governor signed the original legislation. Maryland community college presidents previously approved procedures for determining an undocumented student’s eligibility under the law, and this work will be reviewed at the next presidents’ meeting this month. In addition, I will convene an internal work group immediately to start planning the implementation of the new law.
I am encouraged by the actions taken by Maryland voters. Looking back on the past few months, I am proud of all the students, faculty, and staff who shared personal stories about their own journeys to achieving the American Dream of higher education. Thank you for your courage, and may it continue to serve as inspiration to us all in the years ahead.”
