Poet, Writer, Performer Holly Bass to Host Contest for Montgomery College Students
Local spoken-word artist Holly Bass will host the 2010 Montgomery College Poetry Slam on Thursday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Montgomery College-Rockville Theatre Arts Building, Room 148, located at 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville, Md.
Free and open to the public, the slam features 20-25 Montgomery College students battling for prizes. A panel of Montgomery College students, faculty, and staff serve as judges.
“The Montgomery College Poetry Slam is a venue for our students to raise their voices,” said Montgomery College English Professor Rachael Wilson, co-coordinator of the event. “It’s truly amazing how beautifully and forcefully they speak their minds, and how the slam environment gets everyone’s juices flowing.”
Bass, who will perform her own pieces and introduce the slammers, is a poet, writer, and performer. She teaches creative writing in Washington, D.C. area public schools and is a member of the Carla and Co. dance troupe and has performed her poetry at numerous universities and art centers. Bass holds a bachelor’s degree from Sarah Lawrence College and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University.
