The Montgomery College-Germantown men’s basketball team recently won the 2010 Division III Region 20 championship by outlasting the Community College of Allegheny County, 67-64. This is the second Region 20 championship for MC-Germantown (21-8) in the last three years. MC-Germantown guard Justin Bess was named most valuable player of the Region 20 tournament and teammates Jonathan Taylor and Stephen Griffin were named to the Region 20 All-Tournament team. “I am so proud of these guys,” Head Coach Xavier Joyner said after the Feb. 27 win. “They have worked very hard and deserve to be champions. They have been a joy to coach. I don’t want the season to end.”
With the victory, the Gryphons advance to the Division III District 7 championship held Saturday, March 6 at Davidson County Community College (NC). If the team beats Davidson, 28-4 overall and District 10 champs, MC-Germantown would play in the NJCAA Division III National Championship.
Head Coach Xavier Joyner was named the 2010 Division III Region 20 Coach of the Year. Joyner, in his sixth year as head coach, has already passed the 100-win mark. MC-Germantown standouts Jonathan Taylor, Justin Bess, and Donald Williams also received honors for their 2010 seasons.
Sophomore Taylor was named first-team All-Maryland JUCO, All-Maryland JUCO tournament, and first-team All-Region 20. Bess, also a sophomore, was named to the All-Maryland JUCO tournament team and second-team All-Region 20. Freshman Donald Williams received second-team All-Maryland JUCO honors and first-team All-Region 20.
