Montgomery College Women’s Soccer Players Garner Individual Honors
Guzman, Bowers Named First Team All-Maryland JUCO; Trujillo on Second Team
Montgomery College women’s soccer players Claudia Guzman and Julie Bowers have been named to the All-Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference first team. Guzman, a resident of Gaithersburg, Md., led the Knights with 15 goals in a regular season that saw Montgomery College finish as the top-ranked team in the National Junior College and National Soccer Coaches Association’s Division III polls. The sophomore midfielder added five assists while Bowers, a sophomore backer also from Gaithersburg, anchored the Knights’ defense.
Sophomore midfielder Lilian Trujillo, of Wheaton, Md., was named to the second team after notching 10 goals and six assists for the Knights. Bowers, Trujillo, Guzman, and Lynna Orbe, a sophomore midfielder from Beallsville, Md., were all named to the NJCAA Region XX Division III first team.
“Julie, Claudia, Lily, and Lynna are very talented and have bright futures playing at a four-year college or university after this season,” said head coach Kelly Wakeman, who is in her ninth year as head coach at Montgomery College. “All four players have worked hard to learn more about their positions and better themselves as students of the game. They all possess great desire and are fiercely competitive. I’m extremely proud of what they have accomplished so far this season and I look forward to their leadership in the postseason.”
The Knights earned a first-round bye in the Region XX playoffs and will play Saturday, October 31, 2009. The playoffs will be held at Howard Community College in Columbia, Md.
“The team is excited about a [top] seed in Region XX and anticipating the regional final [Saturday],” Wakeman said. “We’ve been working hard all year to get to the postseason and to show everyone the quality of our team and program.”
