Montgomery College Partners With BlackRock to Present “Step Afrika!” Dance Group Tickets Still Available for March 22 Performance at the BlackRock Center for the Arts
The Montgomery College Arts Institute is the co-sponsor for the presentation of Step Afrika!, a professional step-dance company, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, at the BlackRock Center for the Arts, located at 12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown, Md.
This event is one of the many highlights in the budding partnership between Montgomery College and the BlackRock Center for the Arts.
“We’re so pleased that Montgomery College is sponsoring Step Afrika! at BlackRock Center for the Arts this season,” said Charlotte Sommers, executive director of the BlackRock Center for the Arts. “It’s a very public example of a partnership that runs deep, and we’re only just beginning to mine the possibilities. I look forward to working together with MC administrators to expand programming that connects MC students and curriculum with our mission to engage the Montgomery County community in the arts. And it’s particularly important for us to engage young people.”
Step Afrika celebrates stepping, an art form born at African American fraternities and based in African traditions. The first professional company dedicated to stepping, Step Afrika!’s intricate kicks, stomps and rhythms mixed with spoken word pound the floor and fill the air.
From one-time demonstrations to curriculum-based residencies, Step Afrika! mixes the power of stepping with universal lessons in teamwork, discipline, and commitment and delivers a full range of arts-in-education activities, conducted by artists with over a decade of experience and training.
Tickets are $22 and $27 in advance, $27 and $32 the day of the show. Montgomery College Students can purchase discounted tickets for $13.50. Please call 301-528-2260 or visit http://www.blackrockcenter.org for ticket information. The March 21 performance of Step Afrika! at BlackRock is sold out.
