Montgomery College (MC) is introducing a new and improved emergency alert system for students, employees, and the community. The new MC Alert system can send emergency information quickly and efficiently to students, employees, parents, and community members via text messages, email, voice messages, digital signage, and social media. This enhanced capability is offered through a platform from Rave Mobile Safety, a national leader in emergency notification systems for colleges and universities.
“After much research, we have decided to sign on with the Rave Mobile Safety system to provide our emergency alert notifications,” Montgomery College’s Director of Public Safety & Emergency Management, Shawn Harrison, said. “More than 1,000 colleges and universities nationwide employ the Rave system. Rave provides a state-of-the-art, reliable system that will help make MC Alert communication capabilities among the best in the nation.”
To get MC Alert texts sent directly to cell phones or non-MC emails, students and employees must register their cell phone numbers in the new system. Students and employees should simply log into their MyMC accounts and click the MC Alert icon.
The College also invites community members, parents, MC’s contracted employees and frequent visitors to also register for the new MC Alert system. To create an account, use this community portal link. Simply click on “Sign Up Now” and fill in the blanks pertaining to name, email, and the cellphone number in which you would like to receive the alert.
MC Alert messages will include, but are not limited to, campus closings and delays, immediate emergency situations such as active shooter and lock down orders.
MC Alert is used to instantly reach students and employees when an urgent situation needs to be communicated. In the event of an emergency, a message will be sent to the mobile number and/or email registered with the system. The service is provided by MC at no cost; however, message and data rates may apply.
The alert system is among several communications tools that MC has available in an emergency. The College also has in place a mass notification system and public safety offices at all three campuses. In addition, messages will be posted via the official MC Facebook and Twitter accounts, campus digital signs, and the MC homepage, www.montgomerycollege.edu. For more information, visit the MC Alert page.
Note: Users of the County’s Alert Montgomery system should subscribe to the new MC Alert system to receive College-specific notifications. Alert Montgomery notifications for Montgomery College will cease in the near future. (Alert Montgomery notifications for traffic, weather, etc., will continue.)
