Montgomery College to Host Discussion About the Impact of Armed Conflict on Women and Children
Nina Sudhakar, a research assistant with the Gender and Peacebuilding Initiative at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), will speak at Montgomery College on Thursday, December 9 from 3:30–5 p.m. Free and open to the public, the event will take place in the Science West Building, Room 122, on the Rockville Campus, located at 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville, Md.
Sudhakar will talk about U.N. Resolution 1325, which recognizes the disparate impact of armed conflict on women, as well as the important role of women in the peacebuilding process. Her presentation will come on the eve of Human Rights Day, celebrating the 62nd anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the tenth year of U.N. Resolution 1325. Her presentation will be followed by an open forum in which the audience is encouraged to share personal experiences and opinions.
Prior to joining the USIP, Sudhakar interned with The Aspen Institute’s Council of Women World Leaders and spent the summer of 2009 working with a non-governmental organization in India to assess a local pilot program aimed at integrating former child laborers into mainstream schools.
Sudhakar holds a B.A. from Amherst College and is currently pursuing a joint juris doctorate and Master of Science in foreign service at Georgetown University and a certificate in refugees and humanitarian emergencies from the Institute for the Study of International Migration.
The U.S. Institute of Peace is an independent nonpartisan national institution established and funded by Congress with a mission to help prevent, manage, and resolve violent conflicts by empowering others with knowledge, skills, and resources, as well as by direct involvement in peacebuilding efforts.
